Just one example is enough to disprove it.

    Can you think of one?

  • What ever you or I think- It will not change house prices - its all to do with the supply (being to low)- and the demand (being high) This is the situation we have to live with

Interesting responses so far, the concensus is they're possibly not a good thing - but with mostly bearish posters so far, any claims that they are a bad thing (on this forum at least) is purely subjective.

    Sometimes, Yes.
We need to unlock the large amounts of wealth people have locked into SE property.

Take the highly paid civil servants in London. We could shift those jobs out to the provinces, allowing these people to cash in on their nice big house values and buy a palace elsewhere for less. To reward this good fortune, the new job rate would be lower, because it's cheaper living outside London.

This naturally releases property in the overheated market in London.

Tis a winner, for sure :)

I'm trying to sell so obviously in that respect I see them as a good thing as its more money/equity for me. Bad thing because i have a FTB type property so the deposit required by whoever buys is larger and bad thing because the property I buy will be more expensive mortgage costs higher and LTV higher which could rule me out a decent deal. I would then have to work harder/more and that means less time with my family.

Overall I think high house prices are a bad thing

Homes are not affordable to average wage and therefore it is not a good thing.

A house should cost to buy what the materials+labour+the price of the land costs.
The problem comes from the fact there isnt enough land available to build houses on so we end up with high prices.
