Plastic bags for freezing meat

We tend to get an awful lot of venison at one time (like a whole deers worth) and freeze alot of it, when the meat is defrosting, it always leaks alot of blood.
Now as far as I know, we use proper freezing bags, but it still happens.

I just wonder if either we are doing something wrong, using the wrong bags, or if this will happen anyway?

Is this one of those silly questions I should never have asked?

    Ho hum.

I knew I should have asked the wife before I posted :D

Not sure about venison and freezers - not a Bambi-eater myself. But how about this site for some info: http://www.askthemeatman.com/freezer_chart2.htm

Good Luck - hope you find an answer to your query :).

Do you mean the bag itself always leaks blood? I find that happens too, with whatever freezer bag I use-and I do use proper bags. The only ones I find that dont leak juices of whatever is inside are the pour and store ones, but they are no use for meat. I just tend to bag it up, and make sure I defrost it on a plate so the blood doesn't go all over the fridge or the counter.

(by the way-jealous of the whole deer at a time!:D)
  • I use thick blue freezer bags from Sainsburys and they still leak when defrosting meat.

Yes blood or fluid will leak out when defrosting meat, although l use freezer bags too. l always put the bag in a large bowl when defrosting to catch any spillage.

    Happy moneysaving all.
  • I've not had any problems freezing meat in the resealable freezer bags from Sainsbury's - the ones with the zip kind of thing at the top. I don't freeze deer, but do beef, lamb, chicken, etc defrosts fine, I even use them for stock.

    It's only a game

You're not doing anything wrong. I always get blood when defrosting meat, so always put it on a plate/bowl to stop any spills.

Years ago back in Canada we used to buy special brown paper for wrapping meat in before putting it into the freezer. I found it worked well, was cheap and I didn't get freezer burn on my food! Does anyone know where it can be bought in the UK? Thanks!
