Can't install printer on laptop

Been trying to install printer software for an Epson SX215 on an Acer Travelmate 4000 belonging to a friend that runs Windows XP Home. I downloaded the software from Epson's website because another problem is that the CD/DVD drive won't work (that's another issue for another thread).
This problem stops the printer software from being fully installed - Windows can see the printer and knows what it is, but the print spooler stops suddenly with either error code 7031 or 7034.
I've updated the system to XP Service Pack 3, and I also made sure that the RPC RPC Locator and Print Spooler services are set up to the defaults listed by Microsoft on the Windows XP website.
I've found a reference to a possible solution by Googling which says that a program called client32.exe might be responsible for killing off the print spooler process, and to watch for it and get rid of it in Task Manager and msconfig.
This gives me something else to try, but does anyone have any other suggestions that I could try out? Thanks in advance.

I have seen a suggestion to run the Microsoft Spooler Cleaner, let it delete ALL the printers, then reboot and reinstall them.
It is part of the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools (Cleanspl.exe) but the blurb says it will run on XP.0 -
Thanks, davb, I've got a copy of that too, so I'll try that as well.0
