Hope this helps - from the Inland Revenue site.

"This is the unique reference given to you by HMRC. It has ten digits (eg 9876556789) and you will find it on your Tax Return, a Notice to complete a Tax Return or on your Statement of Account. It may also be on other documents, but not a notice of coding.

If you don't know or are unsure of your UTR please contact your local tax office"

It's the reference you get when you register with HMRC for SA. 10 x numerics followed by the letter 'K'.

  • It is the same thing. HMRC are sometimes unhelpful in their correspondace and like to call it many different things.

It will be the 10 digit number on your CIS card - its used for your self assessment record and is unique to each taxpayer. If you dont self assess, then you wont have one.

UTR stands for unique tax reference. It can also be called a self assessment reference or a payment reference if you're making a payment. Your tax office won't tell you what this number is over the phone as it would be a bit like a bank giving away your pin number. The number doesn't change from one year to the next and it is unique to you.

I have a question: Does the UTR change from one period of self-employment to another? For example, different businesses in different years? Or is it just linked to the individual, and stays the same no matter how many businesses they set up?

I'm applying for WTCs and the form asks for my 10-digit tax reference. But I don't see why they'd want the tax reference from a business that ceased over a year ago???

My instinct is to just put it down anyway, but I don't want them to think this is the same business, or that I've been self-employed this whole time.

the UTR will normally stay with you for good. HOWEVER there are some exceptions,

If you are made bankrupt, then you will be assigned a new UTR to start the year after bankruptcy
If your record has become corrupted or duplicated then HMRC will write to you to confirm which one to use.

You have a personal UTR, this will be different from any partnerships, LTD company references.
