To Work or Not?

I am a stay-at-home mother and my husband works.

I want to find out if we will be better off if I work.

I need a financial advisor who knows all about tax and tax credits and childcare costs/benefits to help me go through the figures.

How do I find someone to help me do this?

Any help HUGELY welcomed.

Thanks

    Use the benefits adviser to...
    • check which benefits you may be able to get
    • get an estimate of the benefits, tax credits or pension that may be available
    • compare estimates if your situation changes
    • save your answers for up to seven days
    • download/print results for reference

In my own opinion I would not be asking Jobcentre staff. Is it impartial advice?
  • Www.entitledto.com is a good starting point. Your local council may have a welfare benefits department which would offer independent help, also the citizens advice bureau offers benefits advice.

  • Hi

One of the things you may want to consider when looking for childcare is the age of your children. If you have a child age 3 or over you are entitled to 15 hours of free childcare in a registered Ofsted setting during term times. This helps enormously :)

    Hi

It is actually 12.5 hours currently per week term time only, however, pilot schemes around the country are currrently taking place offering 15 hours. It is my understanding that this will be rolled out to the whole country from September 2010 and the 15 hour entitlement will be available all year. This does not mean 15 hours for 52 weeks. It means 15 hours x 38 wks = 570 hours per year.

Also the entitlement kicks in from the term following the child 3rd birthday, ie. DOB - 1/09 - 31/12 would mean funding from 1st Jan. DOB - 1/1 - 31/3 funded from Easter Term. DOB - 1/4 - 31/8 - funded from Sep 1st.

Hope this clarifies things a bit.
    keep saving

Go to your local JCP+ office and ask to see an adviser for a BOC (Better off Calculation) they will be happy to do this for you. This will show you how much you will get from working compared to on benefits, personally i would say yes you will be better off if you work.
