Private Hire Taxi Tax

Options
Hi there

This may be in the wrong section but i'm sure it can be moved,

I've just left the army after numerous years and am starting to drive private hire taxi's in Edinburgh. I've sent away the paperwork to HMRC but was wondering if there are any websites you can recommend that i can use to work out my tax weekly/monthly.

Thanks

Murray

Are you working as a self employed driver for a taxi firm,or entirely alone,if the former then the boss should be able to help or ask the other drivers,it wouldnt cost the earth to get an accountant to do your tax and would probably save you as much in tax as they will charge you.
  • Yes it would be a good idea to post your actual agreement.
Could it be something as simple as:
You turn up (theoretically) when you want and drive a vehicle that someone else has driven
in the previous 12 hour shift.
A "controller" gets you jobs phoned in to the office.
You go and collect the punter and deliver them to their destination; if you are lucky you get a return fare. If you are unlucky you lurk around at (say) the airport, waiting for an opportunity to dive in and grab a return fare, convinced that someone else is getting the prime jobs?
At the end of the month you get as print out of what you have done, which you submit as evidence with your invoice and you get paid (say) 30% of the fares.

That is one extreme where you probably have negative expenses because the tax man is thinking "tips".

At the other end of the spectrum is a system where you supply vehicle, diesel. operating licence, MOT, Local Authority road test, Criminal Records Office certificate,. Wheel chair handling certificate etc. etc. etc.
