we should not have to pay such ridiculously high VAT charges in this country. not when we have people claiming benefits off the tax payer for stupid claims.0

OP are you declaring this business to the tax man? If not please be advised they do monitor eBay sellers. IR, VAT and Customs do speak to each other.

not trying to dodge tax just starting to see my income increase so thought id find out what im meant to do. I do know those that do do things legally are the ones who get screwed over and the tax spongers know every trick in the book and get away with it. (im not bitter).
so far i dont need to be VAT registered (dont earn anywhere near 68k per year)
do i really need to register as a sole trader or can i just declare the package prices and wait for them to phone me with an import / vat price i need to pay?
they dont make this importing lark easy.0 -

At 15% (and even 17.5%), we are not paying the most in VAT

Most UK entities can import. You don't need to be registered. A member of the public can be an importer. There's a good guide here: http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageVAT_ShowContent&id=HMCE_CL_001454&propertyType=document0 -

.
VAT registration is based on turnover not profit.
Some small traders don't have to account for input tax, they just pay what is in effect a sales tax based on a typical profit margin for their trade (say 10%). But I cannot see HMRC agreeing that for an importer.
Harry,
PS Are we expecting the scot with the black eyebrows to flag VAT going up to 20% this afternoon?0
