@lostinrates
Hi
Usually VLC media player will play DVDs OK.
(That's the second program that you downloaded).
If you haven't used VLC before, this is how to use it:-
First put the DVD in the disc drive.
Then start VLC player.
Then click on 'media' in the top left hand corner.
Then choose 'Open disc'.
Then choose 'DVD'.
Then click 'Play'.
Following your superb technophobe friendly instrucions...that's exactly what I did the first timeBut re did it , step by step reading this and refering:o and when I click dvd and press play I get this error message:
Your input can't be opened: VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd://F:\'. Check the log for details.

OK, it looks like it's something more serious.

I reckon the drive is at fault here tbh.
Odds on the favourite disc is an older single layer disc that is pressed rather than burnt. OP should check for proof of purchase and then persue a warranty claim ASAP before it expires if it hasn't already done so.
I am trying to persue this. The laptop was a gift and the person who bought it did not give paper work and is not the most organised.- my husband, who keeps paper work in his office/weekday hoe, so has promised he'll look this week...but chances are it will be something that we end up having to sort repair for.
Is it time to take this to a a repair shop then? (but then husband's work provided laptop is iffy about the same dvds? Usually supermarket bought films.)0 -
Is your house smoky or dusty? It could be worth trying a lens cleaner, outside chance but worth getting anyway.
Proof of purchase can be at least a credit card statement or something similar, at least so you can lodge it as a fault sooner rather than later.New PV club member. 3.99kW system. Solar Edge with 14 x 285W JA Solar panels. 55° West from south and 35° pitch.0 -

There is some dust in the cd thingy, just checked...so cleaning will be first step. Will try this tomorrow, thanks for the sensible suggestion.
In fact thank you all for your patience and help. Its very appreciated.
