Feeling Rough

Hi all,
I have a really important day at work tomorrow and am totally full of the cold. Really sore throat and very snotty (sorry - know it's yuck). I am also absolutely exhausted!
Apart from painkillers, limsip etc has anyone got any tips for how I can get through the day? Need to be alert as I am with an auditor all day. Could also do to stop the constant nose streaming.
Any tips welcome.
Thanks

The best tip EVER given to me was by a GP who told me that bog standard milk chocolate...i.e. Cadbury's...no fruits and nots or anything, just plain chocolate, was THE best thing to coat a sore throat. The effects do not last very long, so buy a biggish bar and have it just one chunk as and when your throat is driving you mad.
I'm not a fan of the nasal sprays, but under the circumstances you describe there is no doubt I would use them, although they make you're nose dry and uncomfortable they DO clear it somewhat and thats what it sounds like you need. Can you leave early and go via a chemist, and somewhere to pick up chocolate?
Edit: also to add, small circular quite firm rubbing with one or two fingers n the temples, and along your cheek bones starting right by the nose and working out towards temples can really help relieve pressure on your sinuses and be done quickly inbetween tasks to keep you going.0 -
Thanks so much for your tips. I am allergic to dairy so will have to give the milk choc a miss. Could try plain though. Think the nasal spray is a good plan as a one off. Thanks0

Thats a shame. I think I've tried unsuccessfully with dark chocolate (I'm actually not a huge fan of cadbury's milk and have only bought it for colds) but worth a try.0 -
contac is good for drying up a runny nose although it does feel a bit bizarre to have that stuffed head feeling without the constant streaming.
Be sure to treat your auditor with respect, sit well back, use antibac hand stuff etc - if you give them a cold they won't forgive you easily

For drying up a streaming nose, I wholeheartedly recommend Sudafed. Helps with clearing the sinuses too, making the head a bit clearer.
Good luck tomorrow!Cogito, ergo sum.0 -
Thanks everyone for your comments and tips. When I got up yesterday morning I really did try to get dressed but it just wasn't happening. On top of Sunday's symptoms I had shakes and nausea. So I didn't go to work. Luckily auditor was understanding and we got through it all the same.
Lovely OH took a trip to the chemist yesterday and I am now all stocked up with your various suggestions. Also, took Night Nurse last night and slept for 12 hours straight! Feeling a bit better for it too.
Thanks again.0 -
I think that was the best idea - if I was your auditor I'd be relieved you didn't come in to be honest!
Rest up and you'll feel better soon0 -
Thanks Belfastgirl23. I spoke to the auditor on the phone so he could hear how poorly I was. Think you're right about him being relieved. Making him ill wouldn't have won me any brownie points!0

Don't know if it helps, but from what I understand, when you lose fluids (ie through your nose, eyes, mouth...etc) its your bodies way of trying to get rid of any viruses or bacteria which is causing you to become unwell.
If you have something you need to appear 'well' for the very next day, its probably too late to try anything new, but if you did have a few days, I would suggest drinking and eating well to help your body flush out what it can.
But failing that, things that have helped me have been exercise (yes I know it sounds mad, apparently there is some science to back it up- it does something to boost your immune system or something, anyway, I had a really bad head cold and did this- my cold went away the next day!) followed by a warm shower with some olbas oils and even facial steaming with olbas oils.
And for your chest/throat I'd recommend benedryl, it says its for coughs but it does help with throats too. Make sure when you buy any couch or chest remedy you get a medicated version. So many are just glycerine, sugar and flavors which sort of 'oil' your throat (n/b there is no oil in the product its just a phrase!) but it wears off pretty quick. Most medicated versions have glycerine and some have sugar in too so you don't miss anything out by taking them instead of the general versions.
Hope you get well soon!0 -
