what consequences from not placing deposit in 'protected' scheme?

Hi all, I'd appreciate some condensed comments on this, from anyone has any experience of this. I've read through the 'Tenants' sticky already.
I'm moving into a little house for a few months while the owners are temporarily out of the country. They'll keep paying the bills etc, whereas I'll send them the rent.
The deposit will be £1000, which is more than I've ever had to give in deposit before (largest property I've been in, tbh). The landlord so far has not mentioned deposit schemes, despite the fact that I've got their bank details and have arranged when to move in. They've normally dealt with more informally letting rooms longterm, etc, and I'm not sure how much familiarity with the law change they have (I have little, as I have not had to pay a deposit for some time).
The landlords aren't an unknown quantity, as I know them through professional links. I don't really want to suggest to them that I don't trust them in advance! But in theory, can you give me an idea of what the consequences are (for them and for me) for not putting the deposit in a protection scheme?
Thanks in advance for your help.

'Condensed comment': Claim 3x deposit back if not properly secured.
Condensed question: Why not just ask which the LL will be using and/or suggest one as a hint?Opinion, advice and information are different things. Don't be surprised if you receive all 3 in response.0 -
Thanks. Yes, I've been thinking of asking that way. We have quite a few professional links so it would be surprising to encounter a problem, but...Now: off-set mortgage *up-and-running*...

Do they have consent to let from their lender? Gas safety certificate? Maybe you could ask them if they would like you to research the schemes as you guess they will be pretty busy packing etc.? You would have to take them to the small claims court for three times the deposit, but it's still a legal requirement regardless of how it is enforced.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0

I'm quite surprised they haven't mentioned it to be honest, because in other respects they're on the ball. The let is only for less than six months (this is convenient by mutual agreement), but I'll check about the consent to let. Now: off-set mortgage *up-and-running*...

thanks blckbrd - yes, I've been reading that too, but the detail was more about the deposit protection than being without it under the current rules, which is why I'm still a bit vague on the essentials. Now: off-set mortgage *up-and-running*...

Just noticed the part about them paying the bills, that screams no consent to lease!! For council tax as the resident you are legally liable for paying it regardless of any private arrangements.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0

You can claim during the tenancy simply because the deposit hasn't been protected but then you might well expect to be moving after the fixed term:
