HMRC - Scaring and worrying me - I thought we had an agreement...

Options
Hi - Not sure if I'm posting in the right place but I wonder if anyone can help me?

My husband has a tax debt and appx 2 years ago we set up an agreement with HMRC to pay £200 a month, the debt was appx £7 then and is now £4k outstanding. We have never missed a payment but are unsure as to whether this agreement including upcoming tax bills as we did not pay any more on top of the £200 apart from on one occasion where we paid an extra £400. Today we have been contacted by Collections at HMRC demanding the outstanding £4k and telling us we are about to be taken legal.... is this possible?

I'm worried sick, we have a new baby and although I'm not getting my usual salary we have still continued to make our payments. I feel as though they are treating us like someone who hasnt been making payments....

Today they suggested we go and get a loan to pay them off - we're trying to do this but i'm doubtful we'll be approved due to our credit rating. They also said our debt isn't coming down but we've recently received a statement saying our debt is £4000 despite more recent years tax being added to the debt, so we've therefore reduced it by around £3k...

Can anyone help I feel like I'm about to have a breakdown, its worrying me sick?

The agree ment your OH had was almost certianly just for the arrears. He would have been expected to be making payments on his current liabilities as well. Has he been making his self assessments on time, or are these later bills? If he has estimated liabilities he needs to make the outstanding self assessments as these may bring the bill down.
Short of getting a loan, his only hope is to re-negotiate payments, letting HMRC know about your new circumstances and giving them new details of your income and outgoings.

  • You're right, my husbands spoken to them today and thats what they said. Basically we have 1 - 2 weeks before they take us legal. Worst of all my mum lives with us and doesn't know anything about this and now we're going to have bailiffs at the door. I don't think I can cope with any more of this, what a fab xmas. :(

Firstly, try to calm down, things are never as bad as they seem.

Secondly, have you spoken to HMRC collections regarding arranging a new repayment deal? They may be able to help you more than you think, they are sometimes sympathetic to situations like this.
