Sorry to digress a bit, but do any one know if its possible to recover footage form a mini DV cassettes where the ribbon is torn (courtesy my 3yr old). It's got some of our most treasured moments _pale_0

Do you mean that the tape is no longer able to run thought the cassette as it is broken - the tape that is not the cassette?
Is so you could join the two ends together and run it thought. Was a very common thing to do with old audio cassettes. Might be tricky getting your hands on some splicing tape - not sure. At the point of the join it will be unwatchable but you should at least be able to salvage most of the info.. I would try and copy it as soon as possible and only play it once if that is an option. We all evolve - get on with it0 -
Thanks for the suggestion :-)
Yes, it's the tape ribbon and not the cassette case that's damaged. Trouble with fixing the tape was that as it's a mini DV (for use in compact camcorder) opening up the cassette case is a little tricky and moreover, the tension on the tape is quite high so any sticky tape remedy has fallen flat as it pulls the two joints apart as soon as I try to play it on the camcorder. Also, due to the joined up parts being thick compared to the rest of the tape ribbon, the cassette chamber in the camcorder has also been jamming at times.
Thinking about it, I guess I should try and source one of those DV to VHS size adapters and play it in the VHS player... I'll see how it hows!0 -
Did you manage to do it with proper splicing tape?We all evolve - get on with it0

If you can get something that is designed for audio tape then that might be better
