Help me get my fees back!

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping you can help me out with something. I recently remortgaged from Britannia to First Direct. The application was applied for in May. I signed the papers, paid the surveyor and waited. Finally, the remortage was completed and the monies were transfered from Britannia to First Direct on the 12th June. Last night I logged onto their website and noticed that they have been offering the exact same mortgage (variable offset) but without the arrangment fee (£299) and up to £300 worth of surveyors fees (mine cost £160). I found out that this offer had started on the 6th of June.

So feeling very hard done by I called them this morning asking if they would refund my £299 arrangment fee and £160 solicitors fees. I was told that they won't because I applied too early. However since my re-mortgage went through on the 12th June I still feel like I've lost almost £460! Can anyone advise me on how to go about getting the fees I paid refunded please?

p.s the offer is currently being advertised on their website.

Thanks.

You applied for a mortgage knowing the terms and you got those terms. Deals change almost daily and this is par for the course. Had the charges gone up, would you now be asking to pay more?

I don't think you will get anywhere and to be blunt, I dont believe you are entitled to it either.

dunstonh - thanks for your reply and your opinion. I appreciate that offers come and go and that when I applied the offer wasn't on the table BUT the transfer of the mortgage from Britannia to First Direct went through on the 12th June AFTER the offer had been up on the site for almost a week. Wouldn't you feel cheated if you had paid for something expensive only to find out a few days the price had dropped by almost £460!

edit: Actually a better analogy would be if you havd paid for something over the internet - agreed to wait three weeks for it to be delivered but then when it arrived you found out that they had been offering the same product but £460 cheaper for the last week.

did the solicitors and the surveyor do all the work between the 6th and 12th of June?

I'm with dunstonh, if the offer had been changed on 6th June to £700 arrangement fee and First Direct turned round and asked you for £401 as you'd only paid them £299 but the mortgage went through on the 12th when the fees were £700 what would you be telling them at the moment?

Did you get and pay what you were quoted when you agreed to take the mortgage? ... YES

As far as I see it i agree with the others on here you have no right of appeal I'm afraid.

Another analagy would be you ordered a 5 yr fixed at 4% but in the mean time they moved the rates to 5% would you really want the new one and not what you agreed to?

Sorry mate don't think that you'll be getting the money back.

ok - guess the consensus here is that I don't have a leg to stand on in terms of getting my fees refunded. It still doesn't take away the feelings of "losing" £460 though.

Anyway, thanks for your opinions and keeping it polite.

Can't see why you are seeing it as losing £460.

You are describing two different products. The rate might be the same, but the features are different.

Think of it as buying a "GL" car last month and then when it is delivered you drive past the dealer and see they are doing a "Futbol" version with free CD player for the same price.

It might be the same basic car, but it is a different product with different features.
