Avira doesn't complete scan

I've had several instances now of returning to the PC to find a black, frozen screen when I've started an Avira scan. Subsequently I've had to power off and reboot the system.
Avira is only reporting 'job started' as a history item and clearly the scan has not been completing correctly.
I'm wondering whether I ought simply to download the latest version. Should I, ahead of this, uninstall my current programme or will this happen automatically with the new download?

before you do that, try running the scan from safe mode. Lots of nasties can have this effect, so before doing anything else try safe mode......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

I'm not quite sure what this is supposed to achieve. Are you saying the scan is more likely to complete in safe mode?
I've never tried to use this before and I wouldn't have the slightest idea of how to switch quickly and easily between 'modes'.0 -

Safe mode here:doh: Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
No possible problem with running a programme like Avira while in safe mode? Couldn't be that I'd solve one problem only to get another, could it?0

That's interesting ... under the Avira 'extras' tab I've found a 'detection list' which gives about two hundred entries of things 'found by the programme'.
Does that mean bugs actually found on my pc and quarantined by scans I've run in the past? - because I'm pretty sure all of the scans said something like 'nothing found'!!0 -
not overly familiar with avira, but it could be suspect but not confirmed threats...ensure you've deleted the contents of your quarantine section.
Have you managed to full scan in safe mode yet ?? If so, then download, update and full scan with MBAM (in safe mode if necessary) and post the log back up here..

avira had a habit of listing files that it couldn't scan (ie. the pagefile) as they were in use at the time of the scan as warnings when i last used it.0

No. It is a data base of viruses and malware which Avira is capable of detecting.
Entries of the detection list
Under this title there is a list with names of viruses or unwanted programs that Avira AntiVir Personal can recognize. Most entries in this list can also be removed with Avira AntiVir Personal. They are listed in alphabetical order (first special characters and numbers, then the letters). Use the scroll bar to scroll up or down in the list.0
