Hi
my PS2 is playing up thanks to the kids. Thinking of replacing it. Can't figure if it is best to get a laptop instead. Something from dell for less than £400. Not only can the kids play games online but they can use it for education. or should i just get both
any advice?

unless you absolutely need the flexability a laptop proffers then you should consider getting a desktop ahead of a lappy every time for game play.
much better value for money, and entirely upgradable
as regards your other Q's, early PS2's seem to suffer from perennial dvd drive failure, your best bet might be to try and buy a replacement drive, or like I did last month, buy a ps2 in perfect nick off ebay for £50 odd
