No. This is presumably like overtime; the hospital adds the extra hours to your pay. What expenditure do you have?

No, you can't claim travel costs to your normal place of employment as a tax free item.
  • My husband Jeremy has a business doing surveys an architectural work. He went out to visit the base village of a charity Ashanti Development set up to bring water, healthcare, new schools, business development loans purely as an advsier to check the architectural structures, employ an architect to complete work on a clinic advise on completed work on clinic etc. Is he entitled to claim his travel expenses, taxis etc which he paid out of his own pocket as a tax deductible expense on the business even though he got no payment for it as it was voluntary. In a word, no.
Business expenses are the expenses "wholly, necessarily and exclusively" incurred in the business.

I think Ray is right for the wrong reason.
Business expenses do not have to be incurred 'necessarily' in the course of business as every business is different and its up to the owner to decide what is necessary.
However, as this trip was as a volunteer, then the OP's OH cannot include the costs in his business accounts - they appear to be personal.

If he just went because he wanted to I agree with Fengirl, this is personal expenditure and he can't claim as a business expense.

If this is part of promotional activitie for his business then I would say he can. He might need to demonstrate how he uses it to promote his business though.
