It may be a good idea to apply to the Lost Assets Register as well, incase there is any more money that might just come to light.

These are the rules about who gets what in intestacy http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/family_parent/family/who_can_inherit_if_there_is_no_will___the_rules_of_intestacy.htm

Thanks again RAS - I beleive I will be the only beneficary as an only child (she wasnt married to her long term partner) but its the knowing if I need to publish in the London Gazette, etc, etc that I am unsure of.

I have no clue if or what debts there were other than the house being repossed by the bank.

    Thanks again

    Hi

Basically, as the only child, you would inherit the lot unless she had other children who pre-deceased her and had their own children?

Advertising in the London gazette is the way solicitors insure themsleves against any further claims on the estate. So you need to do that for your own piece of mind (it stops the creditors coming after your later).

Also do check the Lost Assets Register as this lists all those svaing accounts, old insurance policies etc that got lost over the last 50 years.

if you post on Moneysaving in Families and Marriage forum, there are more folk with direct experience.

PS the cost of the funeral is the first allowable expencse and is to be paid for before all other debts.

Even though I have already paid this?

Thanks though - I think I have almost got my head around this now. I'll wait for probate to be granted, then publish in the LG, then wait the required time (do you know if it is 2 months?)

    And relax............................

If the repossesion is going to leave unsecured debt, I would speak to the funeral director and see if they will re-pay you and bill the estate.

The repossesion will have happened months ago. I have no idea what other debts there may or may not have been.

The funeral was paid for partly by me and partly by the social fund.

Thanks again - I must be being a reall pain ;)
