Can someone help me please

Hi, I have just joined and was wondering if someone out there could help me and give me some advice. On Friday 9th June I registered with Littlewoods Catalogue online and placed an order.I was sent 2 emails confirming my registration and my account number.I found I couldnt access the account and it gave me a phone number to ring. When I got through I was speaking to someone from the debt collecting dept, they informed me that I had an old account and owed £409 for a chest freezer and an apple green handbag! I informed them that I had never ordered any items and had certainly not had a chest freezer delivered.Apparently the account went back to 2001.The chap suspected that I had been mixed up with someone else and asked me to fax the emails I had recieved to them.I did this and today I recieved a call from the fraud dept. The lady told me it wasnt fraud and I owed the money and that I had 68 statements sent to me which I havnt. She told me to go back to the debt dept after I asked her to send me by recorded delivery statement of the things I am supposed to have ordered. She told me it would cost me £3 per statement.I informed her that I would speak to a solicitor and then rang the debt dept again. They passed me through to customer services who said they couldnt help and passed me back.I eventually spoke to the same chap I had spoken to on friday and he couldnt believe how nasty and unhelpfull the fraud dept had been.He doesnt belive this is my debt and is trying to sort it out for me but up to present I have had no word back. What can I do? I cant afford to go to a solicitor and yes I have had bad debts but im turning my life around and im getting back on track. Please help. Thank You.

Ask them to send you a copy of the original credit agreement, it should have your name and signature on it. Did you ever live at the address that they are claiming they delivered it to? In any case. they should have this agreement, which they should have if they are chasing you for a debt thats nothing to do with you.

If they dont they cant prove you owe them anything, I believe
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

you should be able to get the statements under a DPA request at a cost of a lot less than £3 per statement too.
After being treated like that, why exactly do you want to spend your money with this company?

I have no intention of spending money with them now.I didnt know about any of this until friday when I couldnt log onto the account. When I rang the number it was showing me online and the chap said debt collecting dept I told him I thought I had got through to the wrong place as I was a new customer.

I believe Lynz is right. Getting a copy of the credit agreement is key. If they can't provide that they have no leg to stand on.

    sounds like an absolute nightmare.

i would continue to try to sort it on the phone but if that doesn't work Lynzpower is spot on , you should write to them (kept a copy and send by recorded post) demanding a signed copy of the alleged credit agreement and all your statements.

Under the Consumer Credit Act 1974 they are obliged to provide the information for a nominal fee of £1. (enclose a postal order and keep a record of the serial number.

If you wish you may like to remind them that it is a criminal offence for them not to provide the said data.

Thanks for all your advice. The latest update is that ive made loads of phone calls to the debt collection dept and each time I am promised a call back.I have asked for a copy of the credit agreement and also the delivery note for the goods as an item as large as a chest freezer would have to be signed for.I have also got a copy of my credit report and the debt that isnt mine is on there. They said it could be removed at the touch of a button so I told them in no uncertain terms that they had better touch that button.I have my own debt to cope with never mind having somthing on there thats nothing to do with me.I will keep you all up to date as soon as I know anything else.Once again thanks.
