Husband wants to downsize-can we afford it?

My husband who's a Headteacher, has been off work with severe stress and now wants to take a job in a smaller school. Trouble is it means a big cut in salary and we have a large mortgage. Can someone work out for me what his new monthly salary would be? He currently earns £50007 a year and pays £840 in tax, £236 in NI contributions and £250 into his pension. On a salary of £40824 and £42,228, what would his outgoings be? Is there a system for working it out?

You could try putting his details into https://www.whatsthecost.com - under the sub-heading "UK Tax". It works out what the tax & NI will be.

Being a headteacher is very high stress and it may be best for your husband's long term health and quality of life to move jobs. I have no answer to your question, but wish him all the best in finding a less stressful post.

If you add up their working hours -research show they average 85 per week- that is not a good hourly rate for such stress. In Scotland there used to be an average of 35 applications for every ht post advertised. Now there are three.
