http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/p46.pdfGoogle is your friend. Basically it seems to be a form that you give to your new employer if you have not yet received your P45 form.

If you start a new job and don't have a P45 then your new employer should give you a form P46 to fill in and sign. It gives you the chance to declare if this is your only job (or not) and enables the employer to give you an emergency tax code.

The new style P46 also asks if you have a student loan to pay off - so they're catching up!
  • hi i used to work for the inland revenue yes i know worse luck, anyway i used to deal with P46's and they ar just a form to get you onto the right tax code as quick as possible, and to let the lovley tax office take tax off you..... what they found back in the 90's is that employers are ot very good in sending or giving P45's to ex employers and to be honest employers are stil the same so a P46 is just a form that the revenue send out to you or a new employer gives you just to make sure your on the right tax code and that you are not on emergency which most new employer without a P45 are emergency tax code is BR code have a look out for this and also it may have an X at the end this is the higher rate tax, so if anyone has been on this code for just haveing 1 job then its emergency and get in touch wih your tax office or payroll or boss to sort it out for you, but if you have 2 jobs then the first job is a tax code like 487L or 503L then the second job is always BR well most of the time anyway, so check out your pay slip ect.. hope this helps and good luck... oh yeah the form dosen't have much room really to put info in if you have 2 jobs say so attatch a letter to the form if you do have 2 jobs and make sure it si stapled to the form as most of the time post gets lost if it is not sucured to the actual document good luck again....

Your old employer will send part 1 to the tax office and give you parts 1a, 2 & 3. You keep part 1a and give parts 2 & 3 to your new employer.

We usually supply them to new employees. The last time I looked the hmrc website did not have the up to date form on it as otherwise you could download it, but it might be worth a look. You sholdn't need it though if you have a P45.
