maybe I'm being Daft!

My current building and contents insurance with Direct Line expires on 14th of this month. I'm just about to use the new search feature for a new policy but I've noticed something in Direct Lines renewal schedule

"Our current administration fee to cancel your policy is £26.25 ........................"

Surely this wouldn't apply if I chose not to renew it would it?

On a different note why can't I find an email address for Direct Line? Why are there only phone numbers?

The insurance policy is an annual contract. If you lapse the policy at the end of the year there can be no penalty / fee.
A fee can be charged for cancelling at any other time though.

If you do decide not to renew please make sure you tell them to lapse the policy with effect from renewal. Many policies now auto-renew unless they hear from you with instructions to the contrary.

Finally - use the word lapse. It is an industry term that is widely known. While cancel w.e.f. renewal means the same thing, poorly trained call centre staff hear the word cancel and try to apply the admin fee.
  • Thank you. Thought as much but with these company's constantly taking the mick I thought it best to check.
