Never again.

I will try never to use this site again! Thank you to the one apology that I had, from White flag I think, and my disgust to the couple of people, Dunstan being one I think, who tried to put it all back on to me! quote-'my problem was !' No the problem was that everyone was bickering and falling out and as the invigilator said.. going off topic! It wasn't too complicated to answer some of my questions. James was if I remember rightly very helpful and professional, thanks for that and anyone else caught up in the battle that ensued ! No need to respond anyone, I won't be looking again. Again I had hoped that you would all grow up and sort yourselves out but looking at the last responses it doesnt look like you have! and yes it is a place where people look for advice, it is up to you guys to meet the challenge if you seek to reply.

...it is a place where people look for advice...

and that's the one thing nobody can give. An opinion yes, advice no. And the problem with opinions is that everybody has a different one. In fact, looking at Dunstonh's first reply, it was pretty good, he just doesn't wrap it up in 'sorry for your situation' false sentimentality which a lot of people on these boards do. He just has an opinion. But then, so do all the others - EdInvestor and dunstonh take opposing views more or less on principle. Bendix is just plain argumentative, usually for the fun of it. What I'm trying to say is that if you walked into a pub with a circle of people who've been discussing the subject for years, and asked a question - you'd have the same reaction - they'd all be off on their subjects, having their own opinion, arguing with each other.

No different. But can I suggest that you read the responses again and think about what's said. There IS no right and wrong answer with finances - just what's correct for you.

If you have a question, and want an answer go and pay someone for the answer.

Demanding that individuals who, for whatever reason, take the time and trouble to try and help people, do your bidding for nothing is risable.

Stamping your foot and throwing your toys out of the pram because you couldn't get someone to give you expensive advice 'gratis' just makes you look pathetic.

Sorry, but this site is a discussion forum, and people will discuss what is posted. Threads will drift off topic, and debates will occur. That's life on an internet forum.

It is not your private thread, and you can't complain if not every post is about your needs. You were given thoughtful and helpful responses, interspersed with unrelated arguments. It is up to you whether you read and digest the useful parts, or storm off in a huff because someone dared to have an argument in "your thread".

It is your attitude that upsets me more than what happened in your previous thread, which was rather mild compared to what I've experienced on a wide variety of other forums!

where have you been hiding- great post .

IMHO it would be good if some of the people who start preaching once the dust settles or threads are closed threw their hat in the ring during the debates as well. The more views the merrier rather than as happens regularly, two posters just batting views back and fore.

why add to a debate unless you have something specific to say, just for the sake of joining in?

I've not got much experience or knowledge of Pensions - I'm hoping to learn from reading this forum, rather than publish my rather questionable opinions! At least for now...

Last week I went with DH to a pre retirement advisory day which was offered by his employers.

Everyone round the table had more or less planned what they wanted to do but each person had a different plan based on their needs, savings, interests and personal experience.

DH plans to take his final salary pension scheme and take out the minimum of cash because the scheme is good, index linked, his family typically live till their 80s and should anything happen to him I would get 50% of his pension.

Another person there intends to take out every single penny in cash that they can - not because they are desperate for the money but because her father died within a year or so of retiring and did not get any benefit from all the money paid out during his working life.

Her attitude is that it is better to have money in your hands now so you know you have it.

Both attitudes are totally opposite but make sense to the people involved because of their experiences, attitudes etc.

What I am really trying to say is that there is seldom one true, simple answer to what at first sight looks like a simple question without knowing the background.

Good post Elona. Just one thing, while it sounds like you and DH are well up to speed, most (admittedly not all) final salary schemes base the 50% spouses pension on what the pension would have been if the lump sum had not been taken. This may not influence your decision but if it does it is worth double checking.
