Hi,

In november 08 i opened a halifax current account. I needed somewhere to put the funds from the local football team i play for. On opening the account i was made aware i had a £100 overdraft. Due to our football club being generally rubbish i had to dip into the overdraft (£58), but was obvioulsy well within it.

Due to lack of funds i have been paying clubs fees etc out of my own personal account, so since the early part of this year it has stayed at -£58.

In August i received a phone call from halifax saying that at the end of the month they are going to get rid of (or start charging for) the overdrafts on my kind of account. They therefore suggested i pay the overdraft off. I did this a few days later.

I thought nothing of this as i never use the account anymore, so didnt see a problem. I then checked my credit report last week (which has always been fair to good) and was shocked to see a very poor rating. on investigating further i noticed a had a '3' on my halifax account, which obviously shocked me.

I complained about this as i've always stuck within my overdraft and cleared my account to zero when they told me to. They have finally got back to me and informed me that in may my account was classed as dorment due to lack of activity, therefore they cancelled my overdraft so i have been in arrears since then! I was gobsmacked as i have never received notification about this and have not been contacted other than i phone call in August in which they suggested i clear my overdraft or they will start charging me.

I'm so annoyed as my credit has been seriously affected because of something i had no idea about. They claimed on the phone that they sent me letters every month since may, but i havent received any. If i had of i would have acted as i do not want my credit affected! Can they really do this to me???? Have i done anything wrong?

I wont bore you with too many details but poor credit means i cant buy the house im planning to buy, the car i want and will probably result in me losing my job as i work for in the financial services sector.

I will be taking this further with the ombudsman but was wondering if anyone had any advice to help my case.

thanks

mark

  • I was under the impression that a poor credit could only prevent you from getting a specific job(police etc).

I cannot see why it would cost you your job unless you were going to be declared bankrupt, as some organisations wont allow this. I may be wrong but seems to me that there may be more to this than meets the eye than an overdraft that sat at £-58

If I am wrong I apologise.

there's not more too it than that. They are claiming i am in 5 or 6 months arrears on my account because i've been 58 quid overdrawn, when they believed i didn't have one. As im sure you're aware 3 months arrears on any account seriously affects your credit.

My point is that they never informed me they have eliminated my overdraft so how was i supposed to know.

Regarding your job comment, yes i can lose my job. To give financial advice i have to be deemed fit and proper. Part of this is to have a satisfactory credit rating. 'very poor' is not deemed satisfactory

    thanks for your comments though
