Damn! Period due whilst on holiday

Drat and double drat! Awoke today to find "the painters and decorators" have arrived 2 or 3 days early. This means that I'm next due towards the end of our Xmas holiday in Malaysia
I'm 48 and DH has had the snip so I'm not on the pill. Has anyone used that Nore-something-or-other drug to delay a period? I've got an appointment with the GP later but he's not the practice's expert on gynae stuff and the lady GP will be away until after I've left.

Having a period would definitely be a problem at that point of the holiday as we'll be doing a days trek, plus a couple of days in basic accommodation. The other option is to ask to be put on the pill for a month or 2 - I'm not vastly overweight or a smoker, so my age is the main risk factor.

What are your experiences, girls?

  • Hi

I have taken the tablet that will delay your periods coming on and had no problems with it at all. You have to take it 3 times a day.

You need to tell the doctor when you last had your period, when next one is due so that he gives you enough tablets.

If he is not up on that type of thing, he will be able to refer to his book.

    Good luck

  • I went on the pill for my honeymoon, and took two packs without a break as suggested by my doctor, as yes wedding and honeymoon just at completely the wrong time of month, typical.

But OMG I had the worst pains ever, and had to be taken off the rocky mountaineer in Canada by ambulance (not the highlight of my honeymoon, although my hubby wanted to take pics of me on the stretcher arghh).

Just be careful, sometimes a period is the lesser of two evils.

PS and yes I still beed ALOT even though I was on the pill, so much so they thought I was losing a baby (no I wasn't preggers)

Sorry to hear your story ClaireEmily. I was fine on the pill back in 1987 BC (before children) and did the 2 packs back-to-back thing a couple of times with no ill effects. Obviously I'm older now and a couple of stone heavier so the risks are increased...GP may say No anyway.

I'll probably go with the drug to delay period if he offers it. Thanks for your input ineedto... Having a period would really spoil that part of the trip for me - I don't think I'd cope TBH.
  • You should be fine, but thought I would add my story as it very nearly ruined my honeymoon, and the insurance issues I had after are another story completely.

I hadn't been on the pill for years, and think my body reacted accordinely (sp)
I did the two pack thingy as everyone else seemed to do it without problems.

So maybe I was just unlucky.

Least I was surrounded by men as I was trying to explain about taking two packs whilst wearing an oxygen mask, while the numerious carriaged train tried to reverse with everyone looking out the window at me.

I can laugh now and have my hospital tag in my keep sake box.
  • When I did the two pack thing on holiday I also found it very uncomfortable - not as bad as ClareEmily but I was very very tender around the chest area (could hardly wear a bra, at least I was younger then :))

I agree with her, sometimes a period is the lesser of the two evils.

Also have taken Utovlan (Norethisterone) several times with no problems at all.

I took two tablets morning and evening while on holiday.
As said before make sure that he prescribes you enough to get you through your holiday.

    Have a lovely time. :D

i have taken noreistherone several times and so has my DD 14 - she has far worse pains after she stops taking them than me but not enough to make her not take them.

I have horrendous periods and can't take two packets of pill together because it would just make things worse. So I can't comment personally. However, my SIL had the same problem last year and was due on holiday. She got some tablets from the doctors to delay her period and instead felt off for the whole holiday and quite bloated (she is 50). I was on holiday with her and noticed how quiet she was and not her usual bubbly self. So if your priority is the lack of bleeding then you will probably be ok but you must take into account that you may not feel very comfortable.
  • I have taken Noreistherone a few times and had no problems whatsoever. I just put in a request at my Dr's and collect the prescription if I need it now.I never tried the back to back pill packs in my pill taking days so can't comment on that method. Have a great holiday!
A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.
