Freezing Soup. Sounds easy but I have a problem!

Hi everyone,

I love making soup and then freezing it in 1 portion batches for lunches, emergencies etc.

I usually put each portion in a sandwich bag with a seal thing. The only problem is that when you put them in the freezer they either 'lock' onto each other as they freeze - resulting in a 20 portion mountain of soup - or they freeze round the basket bits meaning they don't come out of the freezer!

What else can you use that's low cost and available in bulk? :confused:

    Put the sandwich bag inside a tub and pour the soup in. Leave it inside the tub until it's frozen then remove and it will be square shaped and easy to stack in the freezer.

    However, you may need to freeze in a rota or get some more tubs if you don't have many.

  • Ah - V.Lucky. That sounds like an idea. We have a few chinese takeaway tubs knocking around that will do - the lids have broken but I kept the bottom bit.

    We don't eat yoghurt in general but I could get a few in for this purpose - can you microwave yoghurt pots? At least to defrost the soup?

    I use margarine tubs to freeze my soups in - just make sure that the lid is on tight and that they sit level in the freezer. Also easy to pop into the m/wave for defrosting.

    Those deep, round ice cream tubs are good as well.
  • As above, either use a tub to sit each bag in till it's frozen, or if you have space put a few bags onto a chopping board in the freezer till they freeze with nice flat bottoms! :D

    This is the method that resulted in the mountain of soup! All the bags were stacked on each other and froze together!! :rotfl:

    If you have empty 2ltr milk bottles cut the bottom off a few inches then freeze in a sandwich bag inside these. When the soupis frozen take out of the 'moulds' and stack the bags.

  • I freeze my soup in soup bowls so it is already in the portion size I like to eat. I place the bowls on a tray in the freezer until the soup is solid. Once frozen, I pop the bowl in warm water, wait a few moments, then flip the soup out and chuck it in a cheapy freezer bag (don't forget to label the bag, or you'll have loads of mystery soup to eat up). The dirty soup bowls go in the dishwasher ready to be used again.

    The good thing about this, is that the soup then fits back in the bowl when I want to eat it. I simply zap it in the microwave and slurp away.

    I use Pour & Store bags. I buy them from Home Bargains (8 for 89p) and since they are quite a substantial size and made of very thick plastic, i can easily wash them out and re-use them. They have flat bottoms (unlike me) so you can sit them on the worktop and pour your (cooled) soup in to them, close the special seal and they are ready to freeze. They are very secure and as long as you don't spill the contents on the outside of the bags without cleaning it off, i can't think that these bags would stick together.
