Clothes for a funeral

Hi, unfortunately my OH's uncle died today so we will have to go to the funeral. I've never been to a funeral before so I do not have a clue what to wear.

I'm thinking black fitted trousers and a smart top so that I can wear them again.

Anyone suggest anywhere reasonably priced for these? And hopefully ideas for the top.

    Hi ,
Sorry about your loss, what about peacoks, bon marche, tesco or matalan if you have any of these near by?

  • Hi Nikki.

Sorry too for your loss. I've been to a few and I either wear a black suit (trouser or skird) with white shirt or a smart black dress. They don't need to be expensive. Try to supermarkets and M&S have their value clothes range.

I also tend to have my hair tied back (generally it is a frizzy mess) and minimal make-up/waterproof mascara.

    I hope this helps. you
A big thank you to everyone who contibutes to the MSE forums :T
  • Dark and reasonably smart clothes, but I think navy, brown etc are all fine as well if you think you're more likely to get wear out of them again. Don't forget if you are going to the grave (if there is a grave) to have something that will keep you warm and dry - umbrella, hat, gloves are a good idea. Find this out before choosing footwear as well - graveyards can be muddy.

Any sober, modest and dark formal clothing is appropriate. I agree with belfastgirl23, that this does not need to be black and that its worth considering outside wear too. Not only is the grave side relevant, but in my experience people often congregate outside the crematorium/church or out side any wake/gathering, to talk. Whether its smart trousers, or a dress, or even a smart skirt, tights and shirt/jumper.

Dark clothing, and a dark coat usually theres lots of standing around outside, also do you have a dark umbrella? i remember not being able to get mine out as it was a bright colour. I think george at asda is probably your best place to go. Also as someone said think about your foot wear, once went to one in a forest type grave yard, had to walk for miles and there were no proper footpaths, wore a suit so didn't take a coat and had a colored umbrella that i couldn't use. I think my dog walking gear would have been more suitable.
  • Hi, Sorry to hear of your loss. I have been to a few funerals, most recent being June. I wore black fitted trousers and a black cardigan, both from Matalan and they were very cheap. As long as you wear dark colours and it isn't 'inappropiate' you will be fine. I agree with the others about footwear, I had heels on which wasn't good as I had to walk on grass, so I suggest smart flats if you have any, again matalan will have some cheap ones.

Don't forget to ask if there is a dress code, I have been to a couple of un-black funerals, one wanted colour, no black and the other for the deceased's favourite colour if possible.

Most funerals are black and white, although it's down to the individual.

Everyone I know, knows they all have to turn up in casual wear if they attend my funeral.

Try supermarkets and budget clothes shops such as those mentioned by bubbs.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I will probably buy black trousers as I will wear these again no doubt. I'll see if I can find something black to go on top. Have no idea where it is yet except that it will be in Edinburgh - I hate driving in Edinburgh!
  • Sainbury's tu range is 25% off at the min if that helps
