I have been on Income Support, Incapacity benefit and Disability Living Allowance for the past 10 years. I have now found a job which I can do and am due to start very soon but I have now realised that I am out of touch with how things work. The main things I am worried about is how do I apply for working tax credit and how do I cancel the benefits I am getting at the moment? I also remember something about the benefits being paid for the first week of work or something similar. Can anyone point me in the right direction for some information on this and anything else that might apply? Thanks.

Hi Maarten,
A good option for you would be to phone your local Jobcentre Plus and ask for an appointment with the Disability Employment Advisor for before you start work. They'll be able to keep you right on all the benefits etc and may, if you ask, help you complete the Tax Credit application.
HTH and good luck with the new job

Hi Fleago, Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I am not going to have time to get to see the Disability Employment Advisor as I have a busy week this week before I start work on Monday. What I will do though, is phone them and see if I can get some advice over the telephone.0

Good idea Maarten. Even if they can't speak to you when you phone ask them to call you back when they are free.
Good luck!

Thanks to your great advice I made an appointment with the Disability employment Advisor and stand to get a payment of £40 per week for a year plus a 1 off payment of £100. If you hadn't let me know what to do I would have just cancelled the benefits and lost these payments. Thanks again.
