i really wouldn't worry too much. is there a discharge? and is only one eye bothered?
if it's just appeared i wouldn't start throwing "untreated infection" into the equation!

my tom regularly has a scratch on the eye surface (playing, hunting etc can easily cause this)
could also be a hair or piece of seed etc
bathe i and leave the cat to rest but make sure you use a fresh piece of wool for each eye if you're doing both.

Hi thanks for the replys..Laura it is hard not to worry when some repies on here make you feel so guilty for not rushing straight down to the nearest vets asap..also loss of eyes, eyesight storys etc i know are meant to help etc but have just panicked me!.. I tend to leave if he is not distressed and see what happens but seeing as we are away ide rather be sure rather than the cattery having to take him.
    Thanks

Gaby, its probably nothing but best to check it out, it could save a lot of pain and money in the long run. Isnt it marvellous though, always seems that when you make the appointment suddenly the limp goes or the head stops being shaken :) Still, better to go and check it out now - otherwise if it returns you will be annoyed you didnt.

    What does that mean?!!

Sorry, I just meant that loads of folks inthis thread are scaring with you with horror stories and saying he's going to lose his eye etc which is a load of crap. Eye problems can be serious sometimes but they are very rare and few and far between. They also usually have more signs than a very mildly sore eye! Hope the kitty is better :)

Thanks guys..Kvet i see what you mean now! i know these things have to be pointed out but sometimes people can be a little extreme!
Well kitty was fine, the vet said that he may have got something in it yesterday or scratched it a bit so it was scaring him to open again. He gave us some drops for £25 so hope they work, although he has been fine and no shut eye..least i feel better now! rung the cattery as he has to have them 3 times a day and she is fine doing this so all sorted!
thanks again for the replys x

    Great news.
If they scratch their eye - it is painful to open & close it & the drops maybe anti-biotics to stop an infection getting in.
Didn't mean to be alarmist, but it is so easy for a scratch or injury of the eye to become nasty. We were lucky with our aged tom cat & the vet initially thought that he'd lose his eye & is astounded at his recovery. His ended up ulcerated, but cleared up with treatment & he's now fine - thankfully. Our vet is 70 miles, but he needed to go.
He started off like yours with one eye closed now & again - so best to get then seen to

Eye infections can cause blindness, I'd call that serious! My brother has been battling with a double eye infection (bacterial and viral) for a couple of months that has caused a lesion on his cornea :( the reason it's gone on so long is it developed the day he went abroad on holiday so wasn't treated properly at first. Please please speak to the vet.
Is your brother a cat then?

Bathe the cats eye and prise it open. He will be fine if you keep it bathed in salt or tea and keep it clean.
If i ran to the vet every time a cat had an eye infection, I would be bankrupt!

Thanks guys. I know eyes are serious so thats why he still went, ide never have forgiven myself if we had come back to him blinded or badly infected or something.
He seems ok today, still flinching a bit when blinking but fine in himself..he jumped on me in the night with this big thud, scared me half to death!! as i must have moved..went mad trying to bite me so he can deff see in the dark still ok!
