Best footwear for regular urban walking

Hi all, I'm after some advice.
I walk to work 3 or 4 days a week (about 2.5 miles) - in the spring and summer when the evenings are light I would like to walk home regularly too, though last year I don't think I ever did, I always ended up getting the bus.
I also prefer to walk when getting from A to B within London when the journey is 5 miles or less, though I've been known to walk longer distances, up to 7 or 8 miles at a time. I do this several times a week as well.
As I do this so regularly, I'm getting a bit sick of doing it in battered old trainers that don't offer decent foot support and aren't waterproof! I'm hoping somebody might be able to recommend some alternatives. Should I be looking at trainers? Walking shoes like the sort I'd need for country walks? Something else?
Any suggestions would be welcomed.
