Job for the summer

Options
I'm going to university in October and need to earn some money over the summer. Unfortunately, I didn't think ahead and so am going on holiday with the family for two weeks. This leaves me at home for about 5/6 weeks from the middle of August, which is not ideal. Also, I've never worked before. Can anyone answer the follwing questions for me?:-
  • Where's the best place to look for a job for these six weeks?
  • How do I go about applying?
  • How much notice of my quitting is likely to be needed?
  • Can I apply now and specify a start date, or do I have to do it nearer the time?

I should add that I live within easy cycling distance of a medium sized town, and several of the major supermarkets too.

    Hi

what about the local college? Often needs staff to help with extra admin due to new enrol-ments starting. I've seen ads on photo lab shops before asking for summer staff as theya re busier due to people developing holiday snaps. Also try the supermarkets as they will also have staff off for their hols.

Local supermarkets, smaller shops, cinemas, theatres, bars, cafes ... start getting in touch NOW as they may want to take up references before you start and these things can take time. Also if there are any temp agences in your local town, go round them and see what's on offer. Be straight about when you are available - if you're only available for 5-6 weeks and people know that before you start then giving notice shouldn't be an issue, although reminding your manager a couple of weeks before you disappear may be helpful.

If you know where you're going to Uni then is it worth seeing what's available in that town / city? I know some shops let you work term times in one place and vacations in another.

And don't be proud. Work can be very boring. Do your best, even if it only needs half a brain, and hopefully they'll have you back again in future vacations.
