Help needed is this a con?

My stepson has recently recieved two letters from Aktiv Kapital stating he owes £10,000 . It says the original creditor was HSBC last year. He has never taken out loan for that amount with any bank etc. Is this likely to be a case of fraud or this company just trying their luck? On their website it states that they buy debts from banks when a customer defaults. Is this legal?
As they have our address will this affect our credit rating?
I would presume they will have proof of the credit agreement and bank it was paid into. Can we insist on seeing this?
any help would be great please, need to know what to do next.
I like to take one day at a time....but quite often several days attack me at once...

he needs to send a 'prove it' letter.
If he has never had a loan he has nothing to worry about.
There are template letters and someone will come along and post a link.

No it wont affect your credit rating.

They are probably just fishing, they have probably picked on someone with more or less with the same name and are just trying their luck
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

  • take a look at this link, helps you understand how to handle debt agencies that are hastling you http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGOUpBo_bXg if you ask for it, the debt agency have to send you a copy of the credit agreement. if there is no such agreement and they therefore can not provide you with it then you have nothing to worry about
