I guess I don't mind you asking, although I'm not sure I'd be able to account for every penny.

About a third of it was debts run up by my husbands ex business which he ran with his ex partner (mother to his kids). About 3 thousand was a business I went into to try and get us out of the mess (doh). 15k is borrowed for the deposit for the mortgage, some was spent helping my ex out of trouble. The rest was living it up in the past, I used to have horses and compete them, that was my life. I ran up debts doing it but didn't see a problem as I had no other responsibilities at the time and thought disposbale assets would pay a lot of it off (they didn't). My husband had the standard car loan, few credit cards etc. Then I met him, his ex moved out and left the two children behind, I had to move in quickly and the rest is history. He got a ccj at this point due to the business failing, and debts mounted as we struggled to sell the pub and get out. Since then we've been firefighting, but not realising quite how deep we were in.

Now I'm/we're trying to fix it.

I've just used the snowball calculator link - that is absolutely excellent! :T My debt free date atm is July 2012. Can't wait to see that change to a closer one.

    Cheers,
    Brassic.

Brassic - I think you are doing really well with the changes you have made so far.

If you decide to contact a debt charity here are the details you need:
Consumer Credit Counselling Service (aka CCCS)
    Wade House
    Merrion Centre
    Leeds
    LS2 8NG
    Tel: 0800 138 1111
    http://www.cccs.co.uk/

    Payplan
    Kempton House
    Dysart Road
    Grantham
    Lincolnshire
    NG31 7LE
    Tel: 0800 917 7823
    http://www.payplan.com/

    Citizens Advice Bureau (aka CAB)
    http://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/

Remember you can always have the initial chat with them but you don't have to sign anything. Some people on here have decided to go it alone, i.e. following the same principles of the debt charity approach but just doing it themselves. It is obviously up to you in the end.

    Keep us updated!

Thanks Annie - will definitely keep you updated. I've sat down and had a chat with DH, and asides from coming on here often to stay motivated, we've also decided to a) keep a note in the kitchen on a whiteboard of how much we've spent on groceries this month so we can keep an eye on it. b) have a whiteboard in the bedroom (so not readily viewable by visitors but something we see every day) which has in big letters our current debt total, and our current DFD. This way we can keep reminded of what the target it is and how much progress we're making. Hopefully that will keep us motivated and on target

I think for the time being we're going to try and survive without any kind of plan - and see if we can go it alone. I think working together we should be able to get there.

    Thanks folks!
