'Fried' PC

Options
Hi, looking for any advice re my PC

I was using the PC and a 'mini' power cut occurred. the lights
all went off and then came back on straight away - everything
fine except now my PC does not work. (it does have a surge protector)

Rang elec supplier and they say there was no problem and elec
continuity is not guaranteed. it wasn't a power surge or every
appliance would be broke

PC is still in the warranty but only return to base and that will
cost me 45 quid return...if the board is fried due to the power
surge that's not their fault so they may just return it unfixed.

should i just claim on my house insurance ? i think my excess is 50 quid

    have you tried another socket?

does it light up or anything?

What form of surge protection do you have?

i would have thought its your psu more than main board, otherwise you would get some sort of errors etc. so a simple quick trip to maplins and 30 mins on you kitchen table.
    Back by no demand whatsoever.
  • spoke to a PC shop and they say its likely a blown power pack or the motherboard.

replaced the power pack and everythings now powered but won't boot, so i guess the board has gone as well.

this is clearly the fault of the elec supply but they won't admit it and i'll
    have to foot the bill.

As the previous poster asked, what was the surge protecion you used?
  • it's a 4 way plug marked 'surge protected' - clearly a waste of time.

Have you tried changing the fuse? ;)
  • as per previous post I have replaced the blown poker pack but the board is blown.

i'm looking for advice on the best way to proceed.

complain to elec company again, claim on insurance, return to claim under
    warranty (may not be covered)

Just because you have changed the power supply doesn't mean you have changed the lead? Have you done this too?

Plus if you changed the power supply to something that is a lower grade than the original, it may not have enough power to power the motherboard.

this is nothing to do with leads.
there is now power to the board - fans now kick in and lights work but still won;t work. the board is blown.

The lights and the fans are connected to the board therefore the board is getting power from somewhere. You can't just say it's the board because you haven't investigating it thoroughly.

As I said, the power supply might not be powerful enough or a connection inside might not be connected properly. Check all connections to the board.
  • we are missing the point here. i doubt a loose connection is going to develop at exactly the same point as a power surge.

is it best to claim on the insurance, return to base where the fault may
not be covered, or pursue the elec company further.
