Dentist- Initial Appointment
Comments
-
I recently found an nhs dentist as I hadn't been for years and years and was very nervous but it wasn't as bad as expected and I only had one filling - I asked for white and was allowed it on the nhs. My initial appt was about 20 mins in total I suppose.
So for anyone else worried by childhood memories, it's not as bad as I remember, go for it!0 -
Just a quick thought - when I went to the appointment I had to take a card with me which I had filled out, detailing any allergies etc etc, asking what I would like to improve about my smile and also asking if there was anything which worried me about going to the dentist. I put 'Terrified of needles in the gums and of having fillings done', the dental nurse took it from me and nothing was said at all.
I am starting to get in a panic about having this filling done... not til the 12th of Jan. Can I ask to be sedated or something? It all sends me into a blind panic, the needles, the drill, everything

You can either relax, not worry about this until the time, and trust that because they've asked you things like that, they will take it into consideration and give you as relaxed and pleasant experience as possible
OR
You can over-think all this and work your way up to such a blind state of panic that you'll either run away from the experience, or nothing that they try to do to help you will work because your wound up like a clockwork toy.
Chill a bit. This is 2009. Dentistry is only a complete horror story if you really want it to be. If you find a decent person to care for you, relax and trust them to do their job, then it's all pretty easy. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
Please read my thread below, it was only a few months ago that I was in a very similar position.
