On thursday i need to get a prepaid debit card i know you can gets tons online but i just want to walk in to some place hand over my money and walk out with a prepaid debit card that i can use.

There are a few websites i want to shop on and rather then use my barclays debit card i would be happier using a prepaid debit card because with a prepaid one you cant go overdrawn and i have a tendancy to go overdrawn if i shop online.

I heard that once the post office did something like that and also the paypoints?

Yes, the post office do offer one. But the deal is with these (and I'll explain why I feel its an un fair deal in a minute) that you have to pay to own/load/use it. Like you say, you cannot get charged for going over drawn as once you have no money on the card, the card cannot be used until you load it again.

I think these cards are a very bad deal, not just because you incur a fee or a few fees for the card (either obtaining it, loading money onto it or spending on it) but because on most debit of cash cards now, you do not have to pay a fee to own/use the card, many banks do not charge you unless you become overdrawn, so in effect, you don't spend any money you don't have, you get to spend your cash for free. Yet if you get a prepaid debit card, you spend the cash you have AND you get charged!

I have a cash-card. I am not allowed a debit card. I have to go to a bank/hold-in-the-wall to take out cash to spend. I can't go overdrawn as I cannot take money out of this account unless its there.
I am lucky enough to have a credit card which I make sure I only use online where I cannot use my cash. The deal is (that I have with myself) if I see something online, I have to go to the hole-in-the-wall, take out the right cash, then out it in a box. When it comes to paying off my credit card, the money is in the box ready to take to the bank.

O2 also do a pre-paid card if you are an O2 customer (don't have to be contract) and I don't think they charge fees (thou don't quote me!)

Is there a reason you need it by Thursday?
My mum got an O2 card and they delivered it pretty quick, within the week if I remember correctly.

I like the o2 one it looks good. I am going to get one of those tomorrow. Iv also paid my banking charges and got my visa debit card back but i will be getting a o2 cash card tomorow. Its easy to get to a o2 shop and top them up.

You can top up the o2 one anywhere that has a paypoint. My local Spar, Scotmid, Post office, Somerfield and Tesco all have a paypoint to top up my card. It's free to load and use (I've had 2 prepay cards before and this is the 1st free one) BUT some sites will take a £1/£2 charge BEFORE you pay which then takes 2 weeks to be refunded to your card, which is a bit of a problem if you put £10 on to spend £10 etc.

To be honest I've never seen them anywhere that you can just go in and pick one up. I'd check the Post Office website and see what they say. Most of them you have to apply online for. Good Luck

Try here to compare some of the cards you can get. I can't find anything specific about a Post office card other than their travel card which looks a bit like travel cheques in a card form type thing.

I use the Paypal prepaid card, link here. There are no extra charges, apart from loading up through paypoint, post office ,etc, but they are a lot less than competitors. Its free however to transfer funds onto your card from your paypal account.

For me, the Cashplus one at £29.99 a year rather than usage or monthly fees was the best deal by miles. Instant online details of all spending as well. No fees for anything.
