Stop top of bake browning - no foil

I'm making a sort of potatoes dauphinoise, but with root vegetables - the recipe says 40 mins at gas 4 with foil on top, then 20 mins without the foil - but I've just looked and I haven't got any foil! Tescos is shut, so any ideas on what to do? I don't have a casserole dish or anything with a lid, the only thing I have is baking paper!

I don't want burnt dinner...help!

Put another shelf above your dish with the veg in. Put a baking tray on that shelf, which will protect the top of the veg ;)

I use a piece of cardboad box or brown paper on the christmas cake if it's getting too brown.

Ooh I only have one proper shelf (don't ask!), but do you think this would work if I put a large baking tray on top of the dish?

    Don;t see why not ;)

Alternatively, can you put your dish on the bottom of the oven, and your one shelf directly above

You can use your baking paper. Just tuck in round and under the tin. It will not have the reflective properties of foil so may take a little longer to cook but it should do the job ok
  • I just put a baking tray over the top and crossed my fingers, is in the oven now so we shall see!

    Thank you all xxx

the baking tray will work hun - just you see! have to do this myself when i run out of foil (which i do often - as when shopping if asked OH always says we have plenty! when there is only about six inches left)
  • Cheese :-) As in grate it and put it on the top. It will protect the veg and taste yummy
