for those who buy sardines id steer clear of asda smartprice...i cant open the tin they are a pain....iv been forced to move up a brand...if i was trying to live on a tenner id say the reductions in asda in the evening would be worth a look as would the local market that sells veg for a £1 a bowl....sainsburys and tesco do cheap frozen chicken joints..but i dont think its happy chicken so might offend people...the cooking bacon and eggs would be good for sarnies quiches as wellonwards and upwards0

You could try baking your own bread.. 1.5Kg of Sainsbury's Basics self-raising flour costs 43p..0

porridge oats about a pound a kilo
milk 2 pinta (half water half milk)
cheap squash
cheap frozen sausages/burgers or both
cheap spuds
cheap spag in tins/ravioli etc
cheap tins of rice pudding etc
cheap soup
reduced bread (buy more and freeze)
I'd merrily live off that if I had to. I'd be bored but I wouldn't be hungry** Total debt: £6950.82 ± May NSDs 1/10 **** Fat Bum Shrinking: -7/56lbs **
**SPC 2012 #1498 -£152 and 1499 ***
I do it all because I'm scared.

It just occurred to me as well that you could make crepes using the batter mix that is offered at most supermarkets. Go for the value range, as these usually cost 9p, which provides enough for 2 crepes. I did a blog post about using the batter mix for crepes a while ago, and you would find it here.0

I think i would have to get
bag of value frozen veg 79p in Mr T x2
a chicken (value im afraid) to stretch, about £2.80 in tesco ive seen them for
cheap bag of potatoes-would shop around as Mr A had 10kg sacks for a
couple of pounds a fortnight or so ago (missed out on that) £1
cheap mince (not sure on cost in supermarkets but i would go to Gabbotts and ask for say £1.00 worth, they will do that)
eggs (again value, normally get free range) 88p in Mr T i think
value banana and apples £ 1.65 ish
bag of frozen casserole veg £1.00
Think that'd be about a tenner.
I would cook the chicken and stretch it to three meals at least (two adults and one eleven month old)
i would use the mince i had to make a huge vat of what i call mince mix in our house, where i put in the slow cooker mince, tinned tomatoes, onions and carrots to make a nice bolognaise type base and turn this into at least three meals e.g spag bol, mince and mash, cottage pie.
id make a huge pan of veg and lentil soup which would last a few days as i make this often
i would make my bread
due to our income we get healthy start vouchers for milk/infant formula/fruit and veg, i would use these for milk
loads of jackets with beans or my mince mix
I think this would be doable if you have good storecupboard which i do, lots of beans, lentils, rice, pasta tinned tomatoes and tinned fish etc.
Frozen veg is good and can be bought cheaply and used sparingly, i think a tablespoon of veg equals one portion.
Funny this thread is here as not having enough money for food has always been a deep fear of mine and subsequently i have a pantry full of tinned goods and a three freezers stocked as much as i can get in. Some people store clothes and shoes with me its non perishables!
I have found Old Style invaluable in learning how to cook and stretch food to the max and im so glad i found this forum. This mnth we have just £208 in wages and tax credits to manage on untill JSA is sorted so i may be practising what i preach!
Really interesting thread. In addition a bag of value oats, syrup, flour and sugar make great flapjacks/hobnobs
I bet it would be easier to do if vital, i know ive been close to that in the past couple of years and had to choose between food and rent!0
