    That's right.

A monthly private dental care plan is similar cost to an low to average Sky T.V. package.

There's hardly a shortage of dishes on people's homes in most areas. It's all a question of what people choose to do with their money, and less about how much they actually have.

Just to add - there are bad private places out there, just as there are (A few!) good NHS places. Simply paying more doesn't guarentee good work - you need to select your dentist carefully. But once you've found a good one - stick to them like glue!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Absolutely - what I really meant was this particular private dentist is well worth paying for! I was very disappointed when he went private but assumed I'd find someone just as good on the NHS. However, all dentists are not the same!
  • Glad you are getting sorted.
In an earlier post you mentioned you were not given the option of the root surgery (apicectomy)
That is what we do when we havent got another choice basically.
Conventional root treatment is 100% the 1st option whenever it is possible.
  • Confession - I had an abscess once over a bank holiday and sorted it out myself with the aid of a sterilised needle and a bottle of cooking whisky. The tooth lasted another nine years before I had another infection followed by a root canal that failed and then extraction.

I wonder just how much DIY dentistry is going on out there, especially with the diffiutlies in getting an NHS dentist now?

Loads would go on even if there was a free dentist on every street corner - it's nothing new.

My OH did the same when he had an abscess. I wouldn't do it myself but didn't have the option anyway - the abscess wasn't visible at all, so I wouldn't have known where to poke!

The very good NHS dentist I had since teenage moved away 15 years ago, so I had to forage for a decent one ever since.

Four years ago, a new place opened up on the local high street. She got me to pay over £100 extra for "superior" white filling, and it promptly fell out within two weeks. I could feel it was a rush job, and she couldn't be bothered to sand the surface properly, so the finish was abrasive.

I had two fillings in Taiwan in September 2009, and it was incredible. No anaesthetic! No needles. It was disconcerting, but not painful. The good thing is, there's no numb period afterwards, and obviously no possible allergic reaction.

Being a small practice, he also scraped the plaque himself. All for about £50! Apparently it was an official rate for standard work, even though it was private. You can go for famous dentists who charge sky high prices, but the standard private clinic charges about £20 per filling.

A dentist can make a decent living on that, so there's no shortage of dentists. It's free enterprise functioning as it should.

I don't know how we ended up in this crazy state of dentistry. Some kind of Enron like rip off is going on.

Being picky here! But just because I used to think like that- that everyone had sky. Infact many people have whats called freesat or similar. Its basicly an enhanced freeview- you pay for the aerial and the set up of the aerial and your done. They may need a special box (just a freeview box which accepts more channels) but not in every case. And its free to watch, no monthly cost.
Many people get their mates who are technical TV types to put them up for them (seen it/read it being done)

But take your point about private dental care. (Just wish I was able to afford it!- I dont even have freeview, ITV or chnnel 4!!)

If you do get private care, do you sign up to a contract and for how long? is it for months or years? is it worth going in for one, getting everything done then leaving the contract asap- know the better idea is for longer term care and teeth need continus care, but when I've never been able to afford any real work on my teeth or the hygienist or anything else, its got to be better then nothing, right?- only, is it possible to do this?

The dental monthly payment things can all be got out of with 21 days notice to cancel the D.D.

If you just 'pay as you go' - you're only committed for that one treatment.
