Remortgage problems - Help

Way back in March I started the process of Re-Mortaging from Woolwich to Brtiannia (4.49% fixed for 2 years massive saving on the best Woolwich could do!). My discount period with the woolwich expired on 25th May so I thought 2 months was pleanty of time to organize a new mortgage.
Britannia deal included free fees using their solicitor (Hammonds Direct). Following numerous calls to Woolwich, Hammonds and Britannia I am now going to complete tomorrow (Only 13 days late) and for an extra cost of over £500.
The delay was put down to the automated fax systems not talking to each other so the Redemption Statement was not received by Hammonds so they could not complete. They only thought to tell me a week after the supposed completion date. the upshot is that of all the parties involved I am definately not to blame but I have had to extend the mortgage from Britannia to cover the shortfall.
Has anyone else had a similar problem and how easy as it to reclaim the money or does anyone have any tips on what to do now?
