The Claims Guys

Hi All

I might be in the wrong forum but a company called the Claims Guys have just called me who apprantly help people claim back PPI and charges for credit cards and stuff. This is all well and good if they do a good job and don't take commission for it if they are helping you claim back money, but where would they have got my phone number from? They said they only had my name and phone number, no other details, and it comes from their insurers? They were asking me if I had ever had PPI or other charges, but surely if this has come from information from their insurers, surely they know I have or how would they have my number? I told them I wasn't interested and that I am at work (which I am), because I dont want to give information to someone I don't know and who has called me. Has anyone else ever had a call or dealt with these people?

Thanks

DFM

    Hi DFM

In truth they could have got your number from all sorts of places and that is probably more likely than from the insurers.

If you want to look into reclaims then you can do [STRIKE]as good [/STRIKE] a better job than these types of people using the info on the reclaims board here.

I tried to claim back my PPI direct from the bank I have a loan from, but they said I was out of the 14 day period. I also took my loan and insurance out (the first time) online and I have heard because I ticked the box it is harder to claim it back. The second time was when i topped up my loan over the phone and topped up the insurance. I wish i hadn't now, and after I also found out that (I think) they add interest on to it when you are paying it back.

    14 day period my !!!!!
ticked box or didn't untick a box?
Did they explain that you could find similar insurance for about 30% of the cost if you looked elsewhere?

Get your claims back in and don't take NO for an answer!

As for THE CLAIMS GUYS... hard to see how they'd work for no commission but (while the info on here is great, i think it's a bit misguided to say you can do the same or better job yourself - nobody knows the answer to that!) the argument is that they'll get your claim, plus commissions and interest etc, and perhaps they will reclaim 25% more than you could... therefore earning their fee!

For instance, they'll not accept a brush off like YOU'RE OUTSIDE THE 14 DAYS...

Understand that the bank is always going to brush you off and tell you any old story to make this go away... but misselling is misselling and tantamount to theft!

  • Charco - have you used or know of anyone who has used them? I ticked the box when i took the loan out (about 2 - 2.5 years ago). When I spoke to someone the second time (nearly 2 years ago) to be honest I don't remember if they told me I could get it cheaper somewhere else, though if they had of said that I am sure I would have looked somewhere else. I think they did tell me I couldn't take it out after the loan was set up (or that could have been the PPI I was offered for my hire purchase which I didn't take?). I think the feeling i got when i took it out was that if I didn't get it and something happened I would regret not taking it, but now I have heard it is hard to claim off anyway so now regret taking it. They did say actually that I could have it taken off (I think) but that they would then have to re look at my loan and my interest could go up so I thought that might defeat the object of taking off the PPI so I never followed it through. Ooo I am getting annoyed!

    There's your mis-selling point there!

There are 101 ways to skin a cat and probably more ways to mis-sell PPI. I honestly have to say I personally don't have much experience but I know the chat around the industry. I do know plenty of people who have claimed (both by themselves and through companies). I wouldn't recommend one way over the other, they both have their pros and cons. You pays your money and makes your choice! I just dont agree with labelling the companies crooks or whatever (not necessarily this thread but others recently too).

Back to you... indicating that the PPI would be a condition of the loan being agreed is a massive NO-NO! As i said a company representing you would not have taken a brush off so easily... they claim that they will achieve a better return tha you and so justify their 25% fee but i've never seen anything that either proves or disproves this! Up to you!

    Good luck!

  • The claims guys are a rather new company (only reg'd with MOJ in April 2009), therefore they do not seem to have much experienece compared to other claims management firms out there.

However, speaking from experience, I would never go near a claims management company, they get you no more compensation than doing it yourself. They especially do not earn the 25%+ fee they charge.
