Stainless Steel or Ceramic Soleplate on Iron??

I have found a great deal on a steam generator iron but it comes with a stainless steel soleplate.

Is this better than a ceramic soleplate???? Or worse???

I could pay more for the ceramin soleplate but its £40 more expensive is it worth the extra £40??

Any ideas? My iron now has a ceramic soleplate but cant compare as never had a steam generator iron and never had a stainless steel plate either.

Thanks in advance

I personally would always go for the stainless steel as any accidents with clothing will simply wipe or rub off it at high temperature without leaving any sign it was there so long as you don't use abrasive materials, some of the ceramic ones are finished off once you've dealt with the plastic based insignia on the most expensive item in the wash basket if you know what I mean

The only advantage of the ceramic one is that it's less likely to burn the fabric, but if it does burn, it's hell to clean. If you really want that feature, burning can be avoided by getting a teflon iron shield/cover that just fits over the soleplate if you're ironing delicate fabrics - costs about a fiver.

where can you get them from tawnyowls? I havent heard of them before.

That would be a useful thing to have in and will still make the iron £35 cheaper than the ceramic one.

Mainly available from craft/haberdashery stores. Sewdirect have one: http://www.sewdirect.com/acatalog/Equipment___Accessories.html. I've bought from them before and they're good. Allders used to stock them in their haberdashery department; maybe John Lewis or Debenhams might?

It is a very useful product (not that I do much ironing if possibly avoided!) - it protects the iron surface as well as the fabric.
