Best bet is to buy a Mac, an Acer or a Toshiba. The three most reliable machines. :)

Sorry to say, but Acer comes 3rd from bottom in a recent survey of laptops.

The following list shows the failure rate on a given sample of 1000 laptops.

    Asus 15.6%
    Toshiba 15.7%
    Sony 16.8%
    Apple 17.4%
    Dell 18.3%
    Lenovo 21.5%
    Acer 23.3%
    Gateway 23.5%
    HP 25.6%

    Data is provided by SquareTrade.

So, it is Asus followed by Toshiba as far as reliability is concerned.

The fact that HP has a 25.6% failure rate in the first three years speaks volumes.

    Best wishes

  • Thank you SO much for all your help here guys. I aimed to simply warn other people about the issue, but your help is very much appreciated.

I have (finally) managed to get through to someone in the MD's Office at HP, who has said she will call me back by 3:30pm today with a 'resolution' so keeping fingers firmly crossed for that.

If no joy from that, I'm going to use the reliability data you guys have provided, along with all the evidence I have gathered myself, and the template letter on the nvidiadefects website, and go down that path.

    Thank you SO much again!

  • Hi,

I bought my wife a HP G70-111EA for her birthday last year(March). I actuallly purchased it from Tesco Direct on 2 February 2009 but didn't give it to her until end of March, however the warranty would run from day of purchase I presume. After 12 months of very light use by my wife, possibly 3 to 4 hours a week at most, it packed in completely. it just switched off as though a fuse or something had blown. I did all HP recommended checks but when I contacted them they told me that it was a hardware functionality problem and as I was out of warranty would go no further.

I have contacted Tesco Direct but they didn't want to know and i have had no reply to my letter to HP.

Where do I go from here ?? I have a useless HP laptop that cost £450, lasts 12 months and neither HP or Tesco Direct seem interested.

I would be so pleased for some help from this forum to advise me what to do.

    Many thanks Dave

I have had 2 HP desktop PC's that were only just out of warranty and they died with just black screens. I paid a lot of money for both as I had top of the range packages. As they were out of warranty I got no help from PC world or HP.

I will never purchase HP again. I know have a Toshiba Laptop purchased from Argos almost 12 months ago and its been brill. Fingers crossed it continues.

  • My friend had an HP laptop and it died just after a year, like so many on this thread!

Mind, I had a Compaq laptop that lasted 5 years before dying, although I did have to get more memory put in at one point as it was being very slow. Oh, and it kept overheating and switching off for ages, until my dad took it to a repair shop where they blasted some air through it and blew out all the dust... it was fine after that!

I have a HP Pavilion that does tend to get quite hot but I bought a cooling tray for £15, puts the KB at a better angle and keeps the laptop quite cold.
