capquest and 10yr+ old bank debt

Hi was wondering if anyone can help?
I receive a letter from a company called telogram originally some weeks ago asking to confirm my address etc etc.representing a company called capquest.I ignored the letter as had read about a phising scam.
Ive since received a letter from capquest themselves saying as i am now aware they have bought an old debt from a bank(im not aware thats the first ive heard about it).the debt its self is 10 years plus old and the debt is from an address over 10 year ago and ive had no contact in this period from the bank or anyone else regarding it.Within the letter they are offering to half the debt straight away! Can they chase me for a debt over 10 years old when ive had no contact regarding this matter within this period?this debt isnt on my credit file.Should i contact them? anyhelp regarding this would be much appreciated thanx

It won't be on your credit file if it is that old. And it cannot reappear either.

The debt itself is probably "statute barred", and so legally unenforceable.

  • Firstly thanx fermi for your advice and help.
Today i received a letter supposedley from the bank in question on headed paper for that bank stating that they had sold on the debt to capquest! however the letter came in an envelope with the return address back to capquest printed on the back! surely the bank would of wrote to me direct and not sent them the letter to forward on?! Im not convinced this is a real letter from the bank and more so one they (capquest) have mocked up themselves.Anyone else come accross this?
    regards 66taylor
  • Capquest are a 'real' DCA but with a shoddier reputation than others from reading these forums, just send capquest or as fermi calls them crapquest the statute barred letter. They have to legally acknowledge it and stop chasing you for the debt, also amending the debt so that no one can chase you.

I recieved a letter this morning from capquest after receiving 3 phone calls in the last few days which I havn't taken. I am sure I have no dealings with them or any other outstanding accounts. All my alleged debts are in dispute with other dca's so should not have been passed on. I havn't even opened the letter yet so would it be an idea to just return the letter still sealed?. I don't really care whats inside because I know I owe them nothing.
