We have found that the Braun ones don't last very long (usually pack up just after the one year warranty runs out).

Yes, we've generally found that too. Oddly though the current one is still going after about 4 or 5 years (famous last words I expect!).

I have a silly question, more out of curiosity than anything.

Do you need to use toothpaste with electric toothbrushes?

Tchibo do not have toothbrushes right now.
Don't have a Wilkinsons within reach of my regular jousts but will bear them in mind.

Thanks to all for your useful bits and pieces.

Annoying that the reliance seems to be so inconsistent. One would hope to find a consistently reliant appliance we could depend on

Yes, you still need toothpaste, but I find that, because the brush-head is so small, I tend to use much less paste than I used to with an ordinary brush.
I let my mind wander and it never came back!

Popped into my local tesco store yesterday deciding to put my money where my mouth was.
I did think about buying the cheaper Colgate electric toothbrush but I will be honest, their toothpastes never went down well with me so I decided to go with the lot more expensive Philips Sensiflex - £14.98 plus plug adapter.

Need 16hours to give it its initial charge, don't have that available time yet.
    It does operate mind you.
Here's to me in hoping I have made a good investment as I was initially only interested in not paying more than about a fiver.

Wouldn't mind having whiter than white teeth.
