In a Tizz...

2nd attempt.. messed it up last time!!!

Right.. I HAVE to do atleast 20 hours overtime at work to be able to pay of a nice chunk of my debt each month. July is time for our annual pay review and bonus.. and I'm getting nervous! I had my 1 to 1 with my manager and have been signed off as "fully competent" in my job which has taken me about 10 months.. she was abit hesitant about it (she's a new manager to me and the area but not in the company). She come up with development needs that weren't!!

So I had to fight my corner (which I'm not used to as my last manager would do anything to help fight your corner for you!!)... any ways I'm competent.. well more then competent.. most of it would of fallen to pieces over the last year if I hadn't been there!!! I've seen all managers come and go.. etc etc!!!

Anyhoo.. as I said July is my own real time to see a difference in my salary.. the rates of 4% salary increase and 9% bonuse have been declared. Last year I got 9.5% when the rate was only 8%!!! So i will get the same amount as last year (as my salary did change) okay that's not too bad (I can live with that!!).

However.. I'm currently £2k below my job guide price.. and if I only get a 4% increase I'm still nearly 1.5k below my guide price and I'm fully competent!!

Sorry to waffle on.. but my Mum (the font of all bartering!!) reckons I should push for the extra 2k.. which is 13% increase!! I can put in a grievance if I'm not happy with what I get, but do you think I have good grounds to stand on???!! Our union will help me sort it out if need be, but I'm not normally one to rock the boat!! But I've plugged the figs in to my spreadsheet and I could be paying an extra £100 a month of my debts (and that's what really matters to me!!)...

Sorry to go on.. but any advice would be appreciated!!

    Hey there,

Well done on getting the rises you have, that's excellent. You don't need to rock the boat, you could just get some evidence of the guide price, show it to your manager and then have a chat about why you're not receiving this amount. There my be a valid reason, or they may just have overlooked your hard work. I'd also make sure I had some evidence of the work you've been doing recently, and then simply ask for the rise. You don't know if you don't ask. They can only say no.

Still, it looks like you're going to get a rise anyways, so that's good news. Just make sure your lifestyle doesn't exand to fit it!
This year I'm getting organised once and for all, and going to buy a house with my wonderful other half. And that' s final!

I'd ask for the additional increase just to bring you inline with other people, and as mentioned above, show the manager your last few appraisels showing that your more then competant at your job and present information of how you've helped more this year with the stability of the work place with all these differant managers coming and going.

The worst your manager can do is say NO, but atleast you would've asked instead of thinking that you should've asked but didn't.

If you are looking for a payrise id sugges the following.

    1. Keep a diary of all the daily tasks You do, this way you can prove you do certain work
2.List down all the Extra tasks you provide, such as overtime, doing other peoples work, other ways you have contributed such as training/helping other people and so on
    3. Obtain a list of comparable external wages, if one company is paying more than an other bring this up, dont demand to leave, just say this is what the market says you are worth
    4. Ask her what ways you can improve your work, this shows initiative and a willingness to learn.
If she goes over old ground give her examples of how you have accomplished things.
If there are bits and bobs you may not have covered, ask for training, tell them you are worth the investment
    5. Be polite and calm, appraisals and meetings with bosses can be nerve wracking, but they are human too.
They may not be good managers or have any people skills whatsoever, but it is up to you to make some sort of connection, if this requires a bit of butt kissing then so be it, it doesnt make you any a worse person, and will probably demonstrate loyalty to that person.
    6. Remember you are in a competitive market, and this works both ways, demanding a too big an increase can lead to your company looking for "cheaper" employees.
Tell them how much you think you are worth, and ask how can you prove you are worth that much? If the demands are unreasonable, then say so, again this is were the research and diary come in handy, it is so much easier when you have facts as opposed to winging it.

Well im off to work :D have a good sunday and good luck in fighting for your deserved wage

Always a tricky one isnt it - also unsure of what job you do and this will affect the market in general...If you're undervalued you could think about getting another job with bigger salary anyway and that may get them to sit up & realise that you're worth more! But ONLY try this one if you are going to carry it through!! Otherwise what Kevicho suggested would be a good idea. Always good to ask where you can improve and if they dont give you the incrase you want ask what you can do to change it. Hope you sort it!

If you don't ask you don't get. Don't go in all guns blazing but just explain that you feel you should at least be brought up to the level of pay as others and give them so evidence why you should be! :D

Hi all thanks for your comments! Well in my 1 to 1 I had to produce my own activity report.. this was OVER 20 pages of documented evidence of what I do etc etc... I'm not sure I could do anything better then I am currently!!!! I know my aims, objectives.. I currently have no development needs!! I'm involued with organising training and keeping the knowledge in the area up to a suitable standard.. this is very hard with the high turn over we have or the type of people they recruit!! But I just ge to with it.. I know some of the experienced agents are on more money then me and put alot less effort in!!!

I did apply for a manager job in another area but didn't get it, but they know I am willing to go if I find a suitable placement! I love the area thought and I really enjoy my job, I knew I wasn't ready for a manager position but it was very good experience and I now know what to expect should I apply for something like that again! They put me on aspiring managerial courses and should be helping out with interviews soon, it's weird as they almost help you too much to move on!!!

My company are pretty spot on with market guide prices etc... but my top manager has told me what the potentional is, and as I do my job and do it well surely that's what I should be on? If I don't get it sorted this July then it will be another year til it comes round again!! I'm a person rather to regret the things I did do.. not that things I didn't!!! But I'm also one of these people that can't stand confrontation... which is what makes this so difficult for me!!! But if I know what I'm saying I'm 100% correct in, this it makes it a whole lot easier!!!!

There's 2 other people in my area doing the same job as me and neither of them have put in half the effort I have, I should of hope this hasn't gone unnoticed especially as 1 will be handing in there notice after July but who knows what goes on in these managers meetings!

I suppose I just need to wait and find out... but I wanted to get a benchmark of what I would be happy with, what would be my minium and what I wouldn't be happy with!!! if you know what I mean?!!!
