Hi i'm a newbee and i'm so sorry if i haven't done this right!!!
My partner of 2 years still owns a house with his ex - it's a joint mortgage and he cannot get out of it - the ex is refusing to respond to solicitor letters and we have offered a number of different options to her - including her purchasing the house, selling it, her taking on the reduced payments etc. she is still living in the house and just expects it to be paid for her!!
so far it's cost us almosr £700 in solicitor fees ( for writing about 5 letters but that's another story!!)
does anyone have any advice that would help us?! We can't buy our own place until it's sorted and he's been more than fair but has come to the end of his tether.
What would happen if he just stopped the direct debit ???
thanks to anyone who actually takes the time to respond to me!!

You don't get out of it! Its usually a 20+ year financial commitment! Sorry that was a little bit uncalled for.
I was the one living in the house and I could have been described that I was still living in the house and expecting it to be paid for - however thats certainly not my version of events and it was my own form of hell for 18 months whilst it got sold!
Does he pay her the money for her to pay mortgage or do they pay 50% each to mortgage company? If he pays her he should check the mortgage is still being paid and definately don't stop unless he can be sure she'll pick up the excess.
Obviously this needs sorting. He knows her better than any body so may feel he can give some ultimatums so suggest a meeting and discuss the options. Its the only way.

I had something similar with ex. He would not respond to solicitors, paid nothing to mortgage and sat living free whilst I paid mortgage + my own rent. I am in Scotland so it may be different but eventually I served a writ(?) for the court to force the sale...magically he went from being long term unemployed with no income to being able to cover a £180k mortgage all in the space of a couple of weeks!....he knew I valued my credit report too much to just stop paying (18 months of hell from start to finish)0

Well one option as it's legally his house is to move back in to it with you. And really make it your home!
Once life becomes unpleasant for his ex, attitudes may change. You can keep your rented place to return to for those nights when it's just too much.
I am sure this approach will soon bring her round to the fact that she needs to consider alternative accommodation now the relationship has ended0
