Hi,
My wife has just started a part-time job working 16 hours and we are not sure on the income tax rules regarding part-time work.
My question is....Does she need to give the employer her P45 because the employer is saying that they do not need it and only want her NI number as the job is only 16 hours?
Thanks for your help!

Tax rules for part time workers are the same as tax rules for full time workers. Everybody has a personal allowance above which you pay tax.Tell her to give the new employer parts 2 and 3 of the P45 and tell her to keep part 1A for her self...Of course I’m no expert.0

@jimwalton...Thanks for your help
Just an update on this....
Her employer refuses to take any part of the P45 from my wife as they still say they do not need it.
Also my wife recently got her first wage with money put in an envelope and a piece of paper saying how much is in the envelope...thats it.
Surely this is the wrong way to pay her?0 -
In all likelihood by the sounds of things they won't be deducting Tax & NI from her wages, and saving employer's NI on their part. It is the wrong way to pay her in that she therefore won't therefore be receiving any NI credits for Pensions etc.0

What are her weekly earnings, if under £95 the current lower earnings limit and assuming this is her only job then her employer does not have to advise the tax office that she is working for them, and only has to keep a record of how much is paid to her each week.0

It seems to me she needs to register as self employed, if her earnings are below the tax threashold she will not be liable for tax anyway, but she can make her own NI contributions. The people she is working for sound dodgy.0

No, she doesnt register as self employed if she is an employee - with all due respect, thats a bonky idea!
How much does she exactly earn a week?£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0 -
Thanks for the help.
Her weekly pay is only just over £100.0
