How can I tell if it's a scam?

Have you thought of keeping a list of competitions you enter, and the closing dates?
eg Jan2004, Kellogs, Digi-camera, plus details of things like, did you give them your address, and/or which email address you used. (Having a special comps email address can be very handy)/
Then when somebody rings, writes, emails out of the blue, you have a pretty good idea if you ever entered a competition !!
And let's say your full name is "Fredrick Ian, Dennis Bloggs", enter all comps demanding a postal address under the name of "Fred Z. Bloggs" (unless the comp is for a million pound cheque, which might cause problems). To pick up your prize car, or free lawmower etc, you are unlikely to have to prove your identity past showing a gas bill in the name of "Fred Bloggs". And in the future, any letter dropping through your letter box under the name of "Fred Z. Bloggs" has originated due to a competition. If this worries you that you might win that million pound cheque and then be disqualified, try an alternative approach. Give your house a name. So if your address is "14 Long Road", quote the address as something like "Tranquility Cottage, 14 Long Road". (This might not work if you live on the 8th floor of a block of flats!). That should give you a fighting chance of spotting all the comp-related mail that arrives.[ Eat, Drink and be Merry - for tomorrow we get the bill ]0 -

I 'won' one of their holidays a couple of years back and as some people have said it is similar to a timeshare in that you get a holiday each year but you have to pay a 'maintenance' charge, which I thought was quite expensive so didn't take them up on the offer x0
