Cheapest Bicarb, borax etc.

I used to be able to buy Borax at my local Boots, but with teh change in the law they are no longer stocking it and the substititute from my local hardware store is £2.00 for 500g works out really expensive. I have been managing without, but have just washed my towels with my DD's swimming towel and everything smells like the baths! Have put them on again without DD's towel, but am feeling very frustrated. Also does anyone use Citric acid - other than bath bombs or it's other unsavoury use!

So 2 pronged question where have you found cheapest for Borax sub and bicarb in bulk and have you found a washing powder/liquid that never lets you done with smells or stains?

Please could you update me on the change in law as have been having trouble getting this myself. Did find it in my local 99p store as old Tesco stock. Thanks
  • The EU has banned Borax for sale as a cleaner as there is some evidence it is harmful to foetuses and reproduction

 As if we cant make our own decisions and sensible precautions when using Borax. Explains my difficulty in getting hold of it. I find lasts so long dont need to buy that often, mainly use for cleaning kitchen floor. Wish had picked up more when I saw them in 99p store. Maybe major stockists have sold their stocks to other bargain stores like this may be worth looking. I think buying online will make this an expensive option so if anyone finds an alternative would also be grateful to hear.
  • You can get Borax substitute which is as good apparently (my box did help the washing), but I don't know if it makes slime or kills ants. It shouldn't be sold by anyone for cleaning. TBH I wouldn't have any concerns except for the kids - me my fertility is over anyway,(well my DH's is!)
  • is washing classified as cleaning?
