BR Tax code - Maternity leave

in Cutting tax
Hi,
My wife has been on maternity leave for the past year, and has recently handed her notice. She has received her final wage slip which includes her pay for her accrued leave for this year. Her wage slips shows that she has earned £5551 this tax year (which includes her pay for her accrued leave and some SMP). Her tax code is BR, she has paid £1110.20 in tax.
I thought that people normally have a tax free allowance of around 6k, can anyone advise if this means that she should not have been taxed on the £5551 earnings? and how she can go about reclaiming this (if possible?)...
Thanks

She should phone her tax office, hopefully the number is on the payslip or dig out her coding notice, and explain what has happened. If she is not going to work again this FY and is not claiming taxable benefits tell them that a refund is wanted in year and they should be able to sort it out. On a normal tax code and paye she should have paid around £250 - £350 tax dependant on which month / week the payslip is based on.0
